A Framework for Parallel Map Recognition Based on Blackboard Model

Recently, the studies about parallel image processing have been performed extensively. Many systems adopt the data parallel processing for their parallelizing strategies. In the data parallel processing strategy, input image data is divided into some fragments, and each fragment is processed on each processing element (PE). However, in this data parallel strategy, the synchronization among processors occurs frequently. Furthermore, unbalanced data division causes the synchronization overhead among PEs. Therefore, in order to achieve e ective parallel image processing, we have to take not only the data parallelism but also the functional parallelism into account. In this paper, we propose a parallel-processing-oriented mechanism based on the blackboard model for functional parallel image processing. As an application, we develop a parallel map recognition system. We implement this system on the highly parallel computer Fujitsu AP1000.
